What Is Professional Teeth Whitening?

Professional teeth whitening is a dentist-approved cosmetic treatment designed to safely lift stains and brighten your smile several shades in a single visit. Unlike over-the-counter products, professional whitening uses medical-grade whitening gels and controlled light activation to deliver fast, noticeable results without damaging enamel.

At Nova Whitening in Dresher, PA, all treatments are performed in a clean, comfortable, spa-style environment led by a licensed cosmetic dentist — giving you the perfect blend of professional results and relaxation.

Benefits of Professional Teeth Whitening

Choosing professional whitening over store-bought whitening strips or kits offers several advantages:

  • Faster results: Most clients see dramatic improvements in just one 60-minute session.
  • Stronger whitening gel: Professional formulas lift deeper stains caused by coffee, wine, tea, or aging.
  • Long-lasting brightness: Results last significantly longer with proper aftercare.
  • Safer for enamel: Dentist-approved techniques protect your teeth and gums.
  • Personalized shade goals: We customize the treatment based on your desired whitening level.

Q&A

IS IT SAFE FOR MY TEETH?

We use the highest quality whitening gel that is only available to dental professionals. It is safe, FDA approved, pure 40% hydrogen peroxide gel that does not cause any harm to your enamel.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

Whitening session is a single treatment and you will absolutely see the change in color by at least 2 shades. The results depend on your initial shade. More grey undertones of the starting shade, we find to be more challenging to lift and they may require addition sessions. Also you if you have never whitened your teeth before, you may require a second session.

HOW OFTEN CAN I WHITEN MY TEETH?

At Nova Whitening we only use highest grade whitening gel that causes no harm or stripping to your enamel, so you can whiten as often as you want until you reach your desired or possible whitest shade. Our patients normally whiten their teeth every 4-6 months.

HOW LONG WILL MY RESULTS LAST?

Zoom whitening results vary from person to person based on how many staining foods and beverages are being consumed after the whitening. With proper post care the results will last longer.

What is the best way to maintain my white smile after professional whitening?

We offer BOOST that is a 60min touch up with the highest concentration of whitening gel that can be done within 4 months after your full whitening session. If it has been longer than 4 months, we recommend repeating ZOOM, a 60 min whitening treatment. Dr. Waibel also is a big advocate of an electric toothbrush that polishes away the stains. There are also products like whitening strips, whitening toothpastes and customs trays that are a great option for maintenance purposes. You can purchase them at our office.

WILL I HAVE ANY SENSITIVITY AND HOW CAN I MINIMIZE IT?

It is impossible to predict the human factor and we found that the greatest majority of our patients have no sensitivity or very minor sensitivity. We recommend brushing your teeth with Sensodyne or any other toothpaste for sensitive teeth for 10 days prior to whitening session. If you are due for a dental cleaning, do not combine it with whitening on the same day as you may increase the chances for sensitivity. If you normally have sensitive teeth, we recommend taking 600mg of Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) one hour before whitening. We always isolate any areas of recession or exposed dentin with the liquid barrier prior to whitening. If there is any sensitivity, it may feel like random zingers and it should not last longer than 24 hours.

ARE THERE ANY LIMITATIONS?

If you have porcelain crowns, veneers or composite bonding, they will not get whiter. Only your enamel will change color.

WHY MY TEETH DID NOT WHITEN AS WELL AS MY FRIENDS?

Final shade after whitening is highly individual and based on several factors like your initial shade, the amount and the quality of your enamel and even your genetics.

Preparation & after care

Pre-Treatment Recommendations
  • Brush your teeth with Sensodyne or any other toothpaste for sensitivity for a 7 days prior to your whitening session
  • Brush and floss your teeth before your treatment
  • Optionally, take Ibuprophen 600mg or Tylenol one hour before treatment to further minimize potential sensitivity
Post-Treatment Care
  • Avoid staining foods and liquids (anything that can stain a white shirt) for 72h after whitening
  • Use desensitizing toothpaste and/or other products offered at our studio topically or inside your custom trays
  • If you are experiencing sensitivity, have white spots on your gums or teeth, it all will be resolved within the next 48h on its own
Maintain Your White Smile
  • For the first couple of days your teeth will be the lightest and the shade will stabilize (tone down) by a shade or two but still be lighter from your original shade. This is normal and is expected.
  • Touch-up with Zoom Whitening at our studio 2-3 times a year
  • As an alternative, use professional whitening gel inside your custom trays as needed
  • Brush your teeth twice a day with electric toothbrush and whitening toothpaste that does not have stannous fluoride
  • Get professional teeth cleaning and polishing at your dentist on the regular basis
